Dear Premier,

I am distressed and very disappointed with the proposed changes to update the renting laws.

You know there are 1.8 million renters in Queensland and your process asked what renters needed from new laws because the current ones need fixing. It’s very sad to see that rather  listen to the voices of Queensland renters you have chosen to listen to the voices of parts of the real estate industry.

The most important issue renters told you about in their submissions was unfair evictions when leases end.

It suits real estate agents to have people think that rental leases are the same as commercial contracts which makes it easy to evict tenants at the end of a lease term without any reason. This is the wrong way to look at this issue. On one side of a lease the landlord has all the power in an arrangement that is simply a financial matter to most. On the renters’ side it is; their home, the stability, the foundation, around how they can conduct their life.

Your proposed changes weasel around the matter because they include some reasons to evict renters that continue to make it simple for renters to be evicted. Including ‘end of fixed term lease’ as an approved reason, is a real kick in the teeth for renters and perpetuates the status quo. It’s not surprising this change was applauded by the real estate lobby.

Other places have fairer laws that provide more security for renters than your proposal. Fairer laws have not caused major disruption or collapse of so-called ‘rental markets’. In Queensland we deserve fair laws and if your government doesn’t do this who will?

I’m urging you to reconsider and listen to the renters of Queensland. 
•	Make no-fault end-of-lease evictions history and improve the lives of over one third of Queensland households. 
•	Help renters create safe and livable homes by allowing minor modifications so they can add safety devices such as furniture anchors and security cameras, personalise their home by hanging a picture and do the sorts of small things that can make a big difference to improving their lives.
•	Let renters have pets – People like to have pets – Pets improve people’s lives. Your laws should assume tenants can keep pets as part of their family. Landlords must have very good reason to justify excluding a family member.

As Premier, I urge you to ensure that the voices of Queensland renters are reflected in the proposed laws and that renting is made fair, for all Queenslanders.
