Subject:
Save our pets and support Queenslanders who rent
As a local voter in your electorate, I am seeking your support on an important issue – helping people keep their pets as part of their family. Over 1.8 million Queenslanders rent their homes, including individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds. One-in-three renters have moved house in the last year and 40% have moved three or more times in the last five years. Two thirds of households in Australia own a pet. Our current laws are not fair and do not allow renters to have the safety, stability and wellbeing that all of us need in our homes. This includes being allowed to share their life with a pet that is well looked after, suitable for their home and that can be taken with them if they have to move. Around 2,000 animals are surrendered each year to Animal Welfare League Queensland in South-East Queensland alone (and thousands more across the entire state) with a quarter of these due to accommodation issues, including renters being forced to give up their pets due to pet bans. As the fairest option to allow responsible renters to share their home with a pet, I support the process where a tenant seeks consent from a property owner and the owner can refuse with the approval of Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) based on a set of prescribed reasons. A process like this has been adopted in Victoria and the ACT. This system encourages responsibility and accountability from all parties. I don’t support additional pet bonds, compulsory cleaning charges and other additional charges as they prohibit low income households having a pet. Renters already pay a bond to cover any damage, and insurance cover for pet damage is also available to property owners. Pet owners score more highly on the social capital scale with increased feelings of neighbourhood friendliness and a sense of community. With growing numbers of retirees who need to rent, these social benefits help both tenants and landlords, who can enjoy more loyal and long-term tenancies. I am asking you to support the fairest option in the draft legislation being developed and when introduced into parliament. As my local MP, I would appreciate a response explaining your position on this issue.
